Global Distilling Company Investing Nearly $409M to Grow Operations IN CLARK COUNTY

12/22/2021

The distilled spirits industry is growing again in Indiana, as Sazerac Company announces construction of a new facility in Charlestown, which will create up to 369 new full-time positions by the end of 2027.

"Indiana's central location, strong agriculture sector and business-friendly climate make the Hoosier state the perfect place for businesses like Sazerac to successfully grow their companies," said Governor Eric J. Holcomb. "We're excited to see that Sazerac chooses Indiana, as they will become another reason our state is the best place to work, live, play, study and stay."

The company plans to invest nearly $409 million in the project, which will significantly expand its footprint in southern Indiana. The new facility will occupy 1,400 acres located at 12200 Highway 62 in Charlestown, adjacent to Charlestown State Park.

"This is an incredibly exciting project for us," said Jeff Conder, vice president of manufacturing for Sazerac. "The state of Indiana, the Clark County Council, the Clark County Commissioners and One Southern Indiana have been amazing strategic partners through this process. We’re thrilled to increase our manufacturing footprint and our workforce with steady, good-paying jobs, with wages at or above the Clark County average."

Today's announcement marks Sazerac's seventh major expansion in Indiana in the last two years, following announcements in 2021 and 2020 to invest a combined $156 million in its New Albany facility and create 250 new jobs.

"This news represents another major milestone for the county and the region," said Jack Coffman, president of the Clark County Commissioners. "We look forward to working with the team at Sazerac as they continue to build on their success and enjoy continued growth in southern Indiana. Clark County continues to make our focus on infrastructure development to attract new business and assist existing businesses to grow."

"We’re thrilled that Sazerac has chosen Clark County to expand its presence in southern Indiana," concurred Barbara Hollis, president of the Clark County Council. "Their investment is an enormous vote of confidence in the county and in the region’s hard-working Hoosiers."

Pending approval by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) board of directors, the IEDC will commit an investment in Sazerac of Indiana LLC (parent of Northwest Ordinance Distilling) of up to $3.5 million in the form of incentive-based tax credits over a 10-year period based on the company's job creation plans and up to $3 million in redevelopment tax credits based on the company's investment plans. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning the company is eligible to claim credits once employees are hired and investments are made. The Clark County Council and Clark County Commissioners are scheduled to vote on final approval of the company’s local incentives today, with the project contingent upon approval.

Purdue Extension, Clark County, ANR Consulting is still up and going

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Purdue Extension, Clark County needed to adjust its way of offering services to the community. Notable among them is Ag and Natural Resource (ANR) consultation services which still remain available but slightly modified. Except for walk-ins which is not encouraged unless it is absolutely necessary, we continue to offer consultation services via email, phone and text. Where these contact options are not able to provide a remedy and it requires a site visit, we would arrange to do so while keeping to Purdue policy on social distancing and any other safety requirements.

ANR consultations cover a very wide range of areas and topics notable among them are gardening, fish pond management, soil testing, lawn management, ornamental and fruit tree care, plant pest and disease identification and control, and corn and soy bean agronomy.

While these consultations occur at any time, the cropping season from April to September is when we have increased consultation contacts with the community. The community has adjusted very quickly to the current reality and we continue to get high numbers of consultation contacts by email, text and calls.

Please continue to bring your ANR needs and inquiries to Clark County Extension by calling the Extension office at 812-256-4591 or sending an email to skafari@purdue.edu. We have stepped up our services on soil testing to include detailed instructions on how to sample the soil, how to handle it to avoid contamination, how to process and where to mail soil samples to. When your test results come back, Purdue Extension will help you with interpreting the results and provide you with recommendations on amendment needs including fertilizer and Ag lime types and rates to use. Your plant pest and disease problems also continue to be handled both locally and with the Purdue Plant and Pest Diagnostic lab where necessary.

Warren and Jill Schimpff and Schimpff’s Confectionery invite the public to help celebrate Schimpff’s completed expansion into the space next door at 345 Spring Street. Once owned by Great Uncle Charles Schimpff, as a stationery business, the newly restored 1800s building will be used for more retail space and added seating for deli and ice cream service.  The newly built space, in the rear, will be used for storage and future manufacturing.

Throughout the day, customers will have the opportunity to view all areas of the completed expansion. Light refreshments will be served. New candy items and several Red Hot Cinnamon products will be introduced. The lower floor of the historic building, complete with a new tin ceiling and restored terrazzo floor, will present customers with a wide variety of colorful antique advertising. An early 1900s safe was found in the building and has been repurposed as a cash register station. Customer seating includes a variety of antique tables, some with marble tops, and all with unique swing-out seats.

The centerpiece of the new advertising items is a very unique mahogany shelf unit that for years was in the corporate office of the Peerless Candy Company in Chicago. It contained sample jars of hard candy that the company produced. There are 64 jars of candy. The candy was sealed in the jars in the 1950s, a true treasure on loan to Schimpff’s from Kitty Picken, the last owner of Peerless. The company closed in 2007 after 93 years in business.

Schimpff’s Confectionery is one of the oldest family-owned candy businesses, in its original location, in the United States! Schimpff’s was opened on April 11, 1891, by Gustav Schimpff Sr. Warren & Jill purchased the business in 1990, to keep ownership in the family. In 2000, they purchased the building next door to the north and added a demonstration area and an extensive candy museum. The newest expansion, at 345 Spring Street, promises to take Schimpff’s into the future!

Founded by Maggie Galloway, Adam Casson and Dr. Mary Nan Mallory, Inscope Medical initially launched its research and development in Louisville in 2014 before locating its headquarters in downtown Jeffersonville in December 2016.

Earlier this month, Inscope Medical took the top prize in the Venture Club of Indiana’s Innovation Showcase Pitch Competition, receiving a $100,000 prize package. Pharmaceutical Distributor Adding Facility in Charlestown

KnipperKnipper and Company Inc., a supplier of end-to-end samples management services to the U.S. pharmaceutical industry, announced plans today to establish operations here, creating up to 56 new jobs by 2021.

“We are proud to have Knipper joining Indiana’s growing life sciences industry, which accounts for nearly one-third of the state’s total exports,” said Victor Smith, Indiana Secretary of Commerce. “Companies that specialize in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, medical devices and equipment contribute $59 billion to the overall Hoosier economy each year, and that impact continues to climb as firms like Knipper choose Indiana for growth and new jobs.”

Knipper, which distributes and re-packages drug and medical device samples, will invest $20.56 million to establish a 300,000-square-foot pharmaceutical warehouse and distribution center at 1250 Patrol Road at River Ridge Commerce Center. The new state-of-the-art facility will be equipped to manage prescription, controlled substance and cold chain products to meet the company’s high volume Direct to Practitioner (DTP) fulfillment business. The fulfillment center will allow the company to reach more than 75 percent of the U.S. population with two-day ground service, extending Knipper’s daily shipping window and reducing transit times for pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device customers.

New Automotive Supply Chain Operation coming to Charlestown

Governor Mike Pence joined executives of Toyota Tsusho Corporation in Nagoya, Japan, today as the company announced plans to locate a new automotive supply chain operation in Charlestown, Indiana. The facility will be home to Magnolia Automotive Services, LLC, which is an affiliate of Toyota Tsusho America Inc., and create up to 26 new jobs by 2017.

“As a state, we have worked hard to create a business-friendly environment that encourages growth and attracts new jobs to Indiana,” said Governor Pence. “We cut taxes and reduced burdensome regulations while investing in vocational training and quality of life initiatives to attract new talent to the state. And I’m proud to say those efforts are being recognized by companies like Magnolia Automotive Services that choose to create jobs here in the Hoosier State when faced with a world of options.”

Magnolia will invest $4.4 million to establish a new facility at River Ridge Commerce Center in Charlestown. This project, which is an expansion of an ongoing joint venture between James Group International Inc. and Toyota Tsusho America, will result in Magnolia’s first automotive industry facility outside Mississippi. The new Hoosier facility will serve as a key distribution center, supplying automotive parts and components from more than 100 suppliers in North America to various Toyota production facilities.

Magnolia, which is a certified Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), will begin for hiring immediately. Interested applicants may apply by sending a resume to human resources, indicating MAS on the subject line.

Shelter Box DonationTwo Rotary Clubs located in Clark County collaborated and raised $6,000 to purchase Shelter Boxes. Sue Wright & Scott Peyton from the Clarksville Club and Roger Fisher from the Jeffersonville Club are shown at the Jeffersonville Rotary meeting announcing the results. The Clarksville Club donated $612.00; Jeffersonville Club donated $2388; and AT&T Cellular Advantage donated $3,000.

Shelter Boxes provide emergency shelter to areas impacted by natural disasters, and can be deployed to those areas quickly.

Logistics Company Expanding, Doubling Footprint in Clark County

A&R Logistics Inc., a provider of dry bulk transportation and logistics, announced plans today to expand its operations here, creating up to 32 new jobs by 2018.

“Indiana’s stable business climate is encouraging growth here in the Hoosier State,” said Victor Smith, Indiana Secretary of Commerce. “With a balanced budget, triple-A bond rating and corporate taxes on a reduction schedule, companies like A&R Logistics can be assured that Indiana is the best place to expand their business and hire hardworking Hoosiers.”

The company will invest $3.9 million to lease and equip 175,000 square feet of warehouse and industrial space in the River Ridge Commerce Center Enterprise Zone. The new facility, which is nearly 100,000 square feet larger than the company’s existing Jeffersonville operations at 4800 Keystone Blvd., will allow the company to expand its services to multinational companies.

Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, A&R Logistics currently employs 18 associates in Indiana. The company will begin hiring drivers this month as well as tank wash, mechanic, packing and warehouse staff in December. Drivers can apply at DriveWithAR.com; other applicants should call A&R Logistics at 800-542-8058.

Two companies announce plans today to expand, creating up to 40 new jobs in Clark County.

“Indiana has lowered taxes and cut red tape to make it easier for businesses across the state to succeed,” said Victor Smith, Indiana Secretary of Commerce. “Fueled by demand from their customers, Weber Group and Century Industries are embracing the opportunities Indiana offers to grow and create new jobs for Hoosiers.”

Design and construction company Weber Group will invest $1.6 million to renovate and equip its 25,000-square-foot facility at the Sellersburg Industrial Park, adding roughly 6,400 square feet of production space. The company, which provides architecture, construction management and specialty fabrications of all types for branded and themed environments, fine art fabrications and manufacturing, will leverage its growth to meet rising demand from a national client base in the culture, leisure and entertainment sectors. Expecting to begin construction this summer, the company plans to have its expansion complete within 90 days. Weber Group, which currently employs 64 full-time associates, is currently hiring for project management and other positions, with plans to create up to 25 new jobs by 2018. Interested applicants may apply by sending a resume to Judy Kopp at judykopp@webergroupinc.com.

Century Industries LLC, a metal fabricator and manufacturer, will invest $1.02 million to expand its existing operations, doubling the size of its 24,000-square-foot facility at 299 Prather St. The company, which produces mobile stages, mobile bleacher seating, mobile grandstands, food concession trailers and portable ticket booths, will increase the height of its building in order to produce larger staging for its growing customers across the country. Founded in 1978, Century Industries currently employs 36 associates, including 33 Indiana residents. After the expansion, the company will begin hiring assemblers, fabricators and welders, creating up to 15 new jobs by 2018. Interested applicants may apply on site or learn more at www.centuryindustries.com.

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation offered Weber Group, Inc. up to $225,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. Century Industries LLC was offered up to $125,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. These incentives are performance-based, meaning until Hoosiers are hired, the company is ineligible to claim incentives. The town of Sellersburg will consider additional incentives at the request of One Southern Indiana.

Hoosier Jobs, Wages on the Rise

The Hoosier State is nearing record-level private sector employment, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics released data today by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

“The Indiana economy continues regional leadership in job creation, which emboldens our economic development efforts,” said Victor Smith, Indiana Secretary of Commerce. “We are telling Indiana’s story around the region, county and globe, attracting more expansions in the state that, in turn, drive Hoosier job creation and wage growth. Already this year, we’ve seen a significant increase in wage rates over our 2014 projects.”

The Indiana Economic Development Corporation is setting a record pace again this year, with more than 150 companies already committed to investing over $3 billion in Indiana operations and creating thousands of jobs in the coming years. These new jobs are expected to pay an average hourly wage of $25.29, which is a 15 percent increase from 2014 and tops both the current state average of approximately $21.43 and the national average wage of $24.96.

More than 50 percent of these projects are in the information technology sector, which traditionally boasts competitive wages, while 18 percent are in advanced manufacturing – an industry that accounts for approximately 25 percent of the state’s economy.

“Companies are growing in Indiana today with confidence,” said Smith. “Businesses choose Indiana because of our commitment to their success. That commitment has enabled Indiana to build one of the strongest economic environments in the nation, making job creation and wage growth possible.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indiana has added more than 119,000 private sector jobs, averaging 4,100 per month over the last two years, since January 2013. Meanwhile, the state’s unemployment rate decreased for the second consecutive month, now 0.4 percent below the national average. At 5.1 percent, Indiana’s unemployment has decreased by 3.3 percent since January 2013.

Indiana 2016Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay torchbearer nominations are now open

Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann and the Indiana Office of Tourism Development (IOTD) today announced the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay is now accepting torchbearer nominations from the public. Torchbearer nominations recognize Hoosiers who demonstrate exceptional public service, excellence in their profession, acts of heroism or volunteer service to their neighborhood, community, region or state.

“Being selected as an Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay torchbearer is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Hoosiers,” Lt. Governor Ellspermann said. “We look forward to honoring Indiana’s history while also optimistically looking forward to the future during this momentous event for Indiana.”

The online nomination form is available here: http://www.indiana2016.org/torchrelay/nomination-forms/

The nomination period ends on December 31, 2015. Once all nomination forms are collected, a juried nomination process will be employed in each county to select torchbearers. Nomination committees have been formed in each county to manage this process on a county-by-county basis.

“Hoosiers from all walks of life will be torchbearers during the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay,” said Noelle Szydlyk, state director of the relay. “This will be a unifying and inspirational event during our bicentennial year.”

Nominees must be a current or former resident of Indiana or be nominated in honor of a current or former resident. Hoosiers may be nominated posthumously and a substitute torchbearer can be submitted to carry the torch on behalf of the nominee. Nominees can be of any age, but torchbearers that are minors will need to meet other youth torchbearer requirements as outlined on the torchbearer nomination form. A nominee must possess the physical adaptive ability to carry the torch a minimum of a quarter mile. Accommodations will be made for those torchbearers with disabilities. The complete list of torchbearer criteria may be found on the online nomination page.

Developed by IOTD, the relay is patterned after the Olympic Torch Relay and is designed to connect Hoosiers across the state and nation with their home state during the bicentennial year. The torch relay route was charted by a committee of representatives from multiple state agencies and the private sector. The route showcases locations of natural beauty, local interest and/or historic significance to the state.

The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay will start September 9, 2016 in Corydon, Indiana’s first state capital, and culminate with a celebration October 15, 2016 on the grounds of the statehouse in Indianapolis. The torch relay will touch each of Indiana’s 92 counties during the 2,300 mile journey across the state.

In addition to the selected torchbearers, the relay will also employ other modes of conveyance that are symbolic of the history and heritage of Indiana, including watercraft, farm equipment, a racecar, horse and wagon, antique automobile and others.

SBA Disaster Loans Available to Clark County for April Storms

As the result of a Presidential Disaster Declaration in Kentucky, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low interest disaster loans are available to Clark, Floyd and Harrison in Indiana.

The disaster was declared for several counties in Kentucky affected by severe storms, tornadoes, flooding, landslides and mudslides on April 2-17, 2015.

Businesses and private non-profit organizations of any size may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory, and other business assets. The SBA may increase a loan up to 20 percent of the total amount of disaster damage to real estate and/or leasehold improvements, as verified by SBA, to make improvements that lessen the risk of property damage by future disasters of the same kind.

For small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of all sizes, the SBA offers Economic Injury Disaster Loans to help meet working capital needs caused by the disaster. Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance is available regardless of whether the business suffered any physical property damage.

Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster damaged or destroyed personal property.

Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.

To be considered for all forms of disaster assistance, applicants should register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by mobile device at m.fema.gov. If online or mobile access is unavailable, applicants should call the FEMA toll-free Helpline at 800-621-3362. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services should call 800-621-3362.

Additional details on the locations of Disaster Recovery Centers and the loan application process can be obtained by calling the SBA Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) or by sending an e-mail to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov.

The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is June 30, 2015. The deadline to return economic injury applications is February 1, 2016.

Gov. announces funding for Transportation Corridor

Governor Mike Pence made the announcement on June 12, 2013 that state and local partners will provide a combined $22.5 million in funding to complete the transportation corridor between the River Ridge Commerce Center and the Port of Indiana - Jeffersonville. The heavy haul corridor is the first in southern Indiana and will ensure that this area and the state of Indiana are positioned to maximize the possibilities for economic growth around the Ohio River Bridges Project.

“Indiana has distinct advantages in location, infrastructure, economy, tax structure and regulation environment. By leveraging a critical asset in the southeast corner of our state, logistically speaking, this commitment will keep Indiana moving in the right direction as a state that works for business,” said Governor Pence. "I’m someone who believes roads mean jobs."

Scott Stewart, Port Director for the Port Authority of Indiana-Jeffersonville, said that the heavy-haul road would attract manufacturers to River Ridge and increase its marketability. The project will be especially attractive to steel and automotive manufacturers, because they need access to the port facility and River Ridge's 6,000-acre site.

“There is no location in the state of Indiana and, dare I say, the Midwest like River Ridge in terms of its potential in creating opportunity for investment and jobs,” said Stewart. “The transportation corridor is a major opportunity for the Port of Jeffersonville and River Ridge but, most importantly, for the entire region.”

Funding for the project will be made by the Indiana Department of Transportation, who will contribute $11.25 million and a local quartet comprised of the city of Jeffersonville, Clark County Commissioners, River Ridge Development Authority and the Ports of Indiana - Jeffersonville will match dollar-for-dollar the state's investment. The funding will purchase right-of-way for a road and rail transportation corridor and construct a heavy-haul road connecting the Port of Indiana - Jeffersonville and River Ridge Commerce Center to each other, as well as to the East End Crossing of the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Jeffersonville port sets quarterly shipping record

Port of Indiana - JeffersonvilleThe Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville recorded the highest quarterly shipments in its 30-year history during the first quarter of 2015. Cargo volume exceeded 800,000 tons, up 10 percent from the previous record set in the first quarter of 2014.

First quarter volumes of grain remained steady while steel cargoes more than doubled and fertilizer shipments were up nearly 30 percent from the record year-ago quarter, including a 70 percent increase in potash used in fertilizers.

"The strong start to 2015 is testimony to this port's connection to international markets and the diverse portfolio of companies which are leaders in their respective business categories," said Port Director Scott Stewart. "High-performing steel processors, a leading grain and transportation services company and efficient barge loading and unloading capabilities combine to make this port one of the region's top economic assets."

Widely known for its steel focus serving the automotive and appliance industries, the port's increase in steel volume was helped, in part, by the addition in 2014 of Mill Steel Co. of Grand Rapids, Mich. to the family of steel processors that make up the port's "Steel Campus." Mill Steel's new flat-rolled service center began shipping steel to customers last June. Long-time port steel processors Voss Clark, Steel Dynamics and Metals USA also invested in their respective facilities last year to accelerate line speeds and increase capabilities.

Located on the Ohio River inside the Louisville metropolitan area, the port offers multimodal capabilities with year-round barge service to 20+ states, ocean vessels in the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes via the U.S. Inland Waterways System. Rail service is provided by CSX, Louisville-Indiana Railroad and onsite switching operations by MG Rail.

The port now has 28 companies and 316 acres of industrial sites available for businesses that rely on multimodal connectivity for their inbound raw materials and outbound finished products.

About the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville
The Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville opened in 1985 and is operated by Ports of Indiana, a statewide port authority operating three ports on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan. Established in 1961, the Ports of Indiana is a self-funded enterprise dedicated to growing Indiana's economy by developing and maintaining a world-class port system. Since January 2006, the State of Indiana has maintained a single, uniform electronic database containing the voter registration records for all of Indiana's 92 counties. The SVRS is linked to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles database and the Social Security Administration database to help verify voter registration application. The system also exchanges data with the Indiana Department of Health and Department of Correction to assist local election officials in their efforts to remove deceased and incarcerated voters convicted of crimes. The information each voter will view on this website is supplied and maintained at the county level. If this information is incorrect, you will need to notify your County Clerk or Board of Voter Registration.
